La experiencia en la experiencia

Hall of Fragments served as the entranceway to the 11th Venice International Architecture Exhibition Out There: Architecture Beyond Building.

Description from lab.rockwell:

Cinema constructs alternate architectural universes, places where designers can create environments that are free from the material and gravitational restraints of corporeal life. Bullets can be dodged, tall buildings leapt in a single bound, and houses dropped on unsuspecting witches with no damage to the young girl inside. This is truly architecture beyond building, a place bound only by imagination and the limits of projection technology.
This interactive installation sets the stage for “Architecture Beyond Building” by exploring how cinema’s freedom from physical restraints influences perception and behavior. The immersive environment is built of images from iconic films, presented in a manner where the visitor’s behavior influences, or authors, the cinema experience: The motion of inhabitants dynamically affects the sound and imagery on two curving screens – in a real-time simulacrum of the feedback loop between cinema and architecture.

Reincarnation : OpenFrameworks
This is an off-shoot from a visual performance accompanying the Rambert Dance Company at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank, London UK. Originally a flat-e project, they approached me to create abstract visual layers containing subtle hints of human forms and motion, which could tie in with the movement of the dancers on stage. Working with footage of the dancers, I got a bit side-tracked and started experimenting and digressing (after delivering of course ;).

There’s quite a few interesting projects to highlight.  Perhaps the biggest project we’ve been working on, has been a one that’s very dear to our hearts, and one primary reason why we’ve been silent on the mailing list the last months, is a collaboration between OF (Zach Lieberman, Theo Watson, Chris Sugrue), GRL  (Evan Roth and James Powderly) and Tony Quan.  Tony is a completely paralyzed graffiti writer (who’s graffiti name is Tempt) who has advanced stage ALS, and we’ve been developing an open source eye tracker / drawing software to help Tony draw again.  Please check out this overview of the eyewriter project / source code.
